Right after the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, some of the British India currencies were used in Pakistan as there was an absence of a Bank of Pakistan. The currencies were overprinted with Government of Pakistan so that it could be used in Pakistan. Few of the overprinted currencies came back into India. Some Indians erased the overprint and tried using the notes in India. As soon as the government detected this malpractice, they countermarked the note with Pakistan Note or Altered Note, Payment Refused so that it could not be used in India.
